When I graduate, will I be licensed?
No. Schools do not license practitioners. State governments license practitioners.
Is licensure required in Montana?
A new law was passed in April, 2009 requiring massage therapists to be licensed in Montana. The new law will become effective in the summer of 2010. One of the requirements for licensure will be graduation from a program of 500 or more clock hours. Graduates of the Health Works program have more than the minimum number of hours of education. The additional requirements for licensure (being at least 18 years of age, etc.) are reviewed in the school’s Business course.
When I graduate, will I be Certified?
No. Schools do not certify practitioners. When you graduate, you will be eligible to take the National Certification Exam in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork and/or the Massage and Bodywork Licensure Exam.
Will I be able to practice in another state after I graduate?
When you graduate from the program, you will receive a diploma stating that you have completed a 870-clock-hour program. When you pass the National Certification Exam or the Massage and Bodywork Licensure Exam, you will receive a certificate. With your diploma and your certificate, you will qualify for licensure in most of the states that regulate massage therapy. There are some states that have additional requirements. If you know where you plan to work as a massage therapist, you should obtain details about that state’s requirements before choosing which massage school you will attend. In-depth information about licensure and certification is presented in our Business course and is available from the American Massage Therapy Association, and the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork and the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards.
Can I work while attending school?
Weekday program students are encouraged to limit their work hours to a maximum of 20 hours per week. Evening/Saturday program students are encouraged to limit their work hours to a maximum of 30 hours per week.
When I call the school, will I be able to talk to a real person?
Staff members answer the phone on weekdays and on several weeknights and weekends. If we are not in the office or if we’re on another call, you will be connected to our voice mail. We will be happy to return your call promptly, and we encourage you to give us days and times when we can best reach you.
